Giving when things are tight

If you've been around here for a bit, you've probably heard us say: "The truest measure of wealth is the ability to give." That has a very nice consequence — everybody can be as wealthy as they want to be. So how do you go about giving if there's not a lot to give? We've mentioned volunteering — we think that almost everybody should incorporate volunteering into their lives in one way or another. Brindey Weber has a few other ideas:

  • Donate your hairLocks of Love accepts a minimum of 10", and Pantene's Beautiful Lengths accepts 8" or more.
  • Donate old booksA number of organizations accept books, some for resale and fundraising, others to help rebuild local libraries affected by hurricanes and other disasters.
  • Promote non-profits — Many don't have money for PR, and would love the support. Link to their blog, mention them on Facebook or Twitter or write an article about them for your blog.

and several more. In a way, it's all about what you believe about yourself. If you see yourself as a person who is giving, you'll be amazed at the opportunities that present themselves.
