Agriculture Team

Modern agriculture depends on money - lots and lots of it. Our agriculture team explores alternatives that (a) are within the reach of people who live on a dollar or two a day, (b) are sustainable, without requiring chemicals that deplete the soil and/or are not locally available. Some of the things we've been exploring include:

  • Using biochar to improve soil fertility
  • Using chicken manure as fertilizer
  • Following a "sabbath year" model of agriculture, planting fallow crops every seven years

For the last two years we've grown teff, Ethiopia's staple crop. We're excited about teff, both as a source of protein for people, but also as the basis of a small farm economy, providing protein and food for animals.
