Garden Team

Our Garden Team focuses on family-scale vegetable gardening of all sorts. Some of the areas of particular interest include:
- Sustainable gardening and pest management
- Learning how to grow un- and under-utilized plants
- Exploring novel methods of growing plants to increase yield and applicability
- Urban and peri-urban gardening
The Garden is a particular favorite for many of our visitors and volunteers.
Plants
The garden team grows plants in four categories:
- "Normal" garden plants (sweet potatoes, beets and other root crops, tomatoes, etc.)
- Plants that are common for food elsewhere, but not in the United States (yard long beans, many kinds of basil)
- Plants that are not commonly grown for food, but that are promising (lablab, arugula...)
- Native edible plants (perilla, lambs quarter, garlic mustard...)
