Garden Team

Our Garden Team focuses on family-scale vegetable gardening of all sorts. Some of the areas of particular interest include:

  • Sustainable gardening and pest management
  • Learning how to grow un- and under-utilized plants
  • Exploring novel methods of growing plants to increase yield and applicability
  • Urban and peri-urban gardening

The Garden is a particular favorite for many of our visitors and volunteers.

Plants

The garden team grows plants in four categories:

  1. "Normal" garden plants (sweet potatoes, beets and other root crops, tomatoes, etc.)
  2. Plants that are common for food elsewhere, but not in the United States (yard long beans, many kinds of basil)
  3. Plants that are not commonly grown for food, but that are promising (lablab, arugula...)
  4. Native edible plants (perilla, lambs quarter, garlic mustard...)
