Construction Team

Construction is a trade-off between time and money. The methods and technologies behind modern construction are durable, safe and expensive. In contrast, historical construction is much, much cheaper, but takes a great deal more time. Our construction team seeks to use modern methods, combined with modernized versions of historical and innovative construction materials and methods, to build safe, affordable, efficient housing. Some of the particular methods that we're excited about include:

  • Straw-bale construction, which can achive an R-45 insulation factor with what otherwise would be agricultural plant waste
  • Rammed-earth construction, a technique that can use local materials to achieve strong, beautiful load-bearing structures and surfaces
  • Earth-sheltered construction, using the earth's constant temperature to provide dry, maintainable, housing with a tiny fraction of the energy cost of traditional housing
